Thanksgiving comes but once a year..

...and apparently, so do my posts. (Slight exaggeration but not far off the mark.)

As I always say, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday - all the food and conviviality of Christmas, without the anxiety that I get with regards to gift-giving. Plus my birthday falls on Thanksgiving every so often, and that's pretty cool, too.

I'm developing the menu and want all the probable links in one place, so here goes:

• Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad with Apples, Hazelnuts & Brown Butter Dressing (the Kitchn)
• Gil's Turducken Roll (made of all breasts - turkey, duck, chicken - with cornbread, bacon, leek & pecan stuffing, and Andouille sausage stuffing adapted from Paul Prudhomme but with rice and red bell peppers instead of green) and maybe a couple of turkey thighs roasted on the side for dark meat lovers (like me!)
• Cranberry Orange Sauce (Cook's Illustrated, but kicked up with a 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne + a combination of ginger liqueur with the orange liqueur + a couple of springs of fresh rosemary added at the end)
• Green Beans with Sautéed Shallots and Vermouth (Cook's Illustrated)
• Acorn Squash with Brown Butter (MSL Nov 2013)
• Bruleed Pumpkin Pie with Pumpkin-Seed Piecrust (MSL Nov 2013) or maybe Chef Hubert's Tarte Tatin

Sunday supper, by way of the great eastern sub-continent

Dinner tonight:

• Rogan Josh (but made with lamb shanks, and braised in oven at 250)
• Roasted Cabbage with black mustard seeds, whole cumin, red pepper flakes
• A variation on Carrots & Peas Porial from Ruth Law's Indian Light Cooking
• Cucumber Raita (same source)
• Spinach Samosas (frozen)
• Mango Chutney

Delicious. With fresh strawberries for dessert.

Sunday Supper Club

G-man's cousin Elsa was visiting Dallas thIs weekend with her friend George, so they joined Ron and Los G' Tres for Sunday dinner. Broke out some go-to recipes and added some improv bits.

• Cheese tray with lemon Stilton, cranberry cheddar, and some other cheese with Whole Foods' pretzel baguette
• Salad of mixed citrus fruits with shaved fennel, parsley and a simple shallot vinaigrette (a riff on Judy Rodgers' Butter Lettuce with Oranges, Avocado & Shallot Vinaigrette from The Zuni Cafe Cookbook)
• Roti de Porc au Lait (from Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook)
• Gratin of summer squashes, red bell pepper, onion, and plum tomato layered with parmesan cheese and olive oil
• Broccoli with lemon
• Almond Cake (from Amanda Hesser's Cooking for Mr. Latte) with cherries in port reduction sauce
• Fudge Almond and Coconut Macaroons (from Cook's Illustrated online) - because the Almond Cake takes four egg yolks, and what else am I going to do with all of those leftover whites?

Started with good old Gin n Tonics, switched to a lovely bubbly Albrecht cremant for dinner, and chased it all with a drop of Averna.

Testing

I kind of stopped blogging when I got my iPad & iPhone. Couldn't find a decent mobile app for making blog posts. So now, a year or two later, I may found something that works? Let's see if I can post a picture...

(huh, not yet. Better go watch more training videos.)
